We just got our first Anas Acuta unwrapped and out on the floor. For those not familiar with this boat from Britain’s Valley Sea Kayaks, it is the original ‘modern’ sea kayak. It was designed in 1971 by Geoff Blackford based on drawings of a centuries old design from the West Greenland village of Igdlorssuit. Modern designs have evolved and to some extent the Acuta has evolved with them – keyhole cockpit, day hatch, bulkheads, kevlar/carbon construction – but the core of the boat has withstood the test of time: hard chines, low volume, high rocker, pure rough water play machine. Maybe my next day off I’ll get to take it out to play!
